Look at what I found in the mail last night!!!
This is the prize for the recent contest on the Knitty.com blog (click the blog link to see some really cool 'guerilla knitting' and other wonderful fiber-related stuff) - two lovely, soft, huggable skeins from the Loopy Ewe with which to make Cuckoo Mittens (click on the link to get the pattern for yourself - Knitty.com is a wonderful online magazine full of great patterns and informative articles. Not only that, but they pay their designers decently and then provide the patterns to us for free. Please support this community-minded effort by also supporting their advertisers and sponsors - we definitely want Knitty.com to stay around for a long, long time!)
I want to put in a special plug for the incredibly efficient and kindly folks at the Loopy Ewe. They must have mailed off the package about one second after they got my address... and I almost suspect they asked Scotty to Beam It Up, it got to me so quickly. Not only that, but the prize itself was only supposed to be the yarn - but as you can see, they thoughtfully added an extra special treat to the mix. How cool is that?

Hobbitish Birthdays Are Great Fun - Contest Results!
A huge grateful "Thank You" to everyone who entered my little contest. I really enjoyed the stories, and encourage everyone to go to the Contest post and read the Comments section - very entertaining and edifying! If you have time, it's well worth the effort to link to the authors' blogs. These women are talented fiber artists and entertaining writers; they have more stories to tell than the small tales they recounted here. That said, their Fiber Tales were wonderful!
There were funny ones:
Elaine has to prove that she is not being beleaguered by Rumpelstiltskin,
grumpy crumpet reminds us that adults are rather dim,
knitnzu relates that she more fashion rebel than fashion icon in earlier days,
Carol's teenaged complexion was evidently better than that of her sweater,
Becka proves that sewing is rarely Deadly,
and Sarah admits that she occasionally mimics my brilliant social skills (poor thing!)
There were enthusiastic ones about sharing our love of fiber:
ikinlala relates how her parents sewed love into her school backpack,
delighted hands, aunt janet, and Karen are sharing their skills with future fiber artists,
while turtle's grandmother ties several generations together with baby caps,
and the crazy lady with purple fingers is competing with herself to improve her own skills (aren't we all?)
There were tender memories of loved ones now gone:
laughingrat reminds us that our furry friends are fiber lovers, too...
knitmomma feels her grandmother's love with every stitch,
There was even one or two that were about me:
Mom wants to know what cake to bake, and Mrs. Pao explains why she is fairly sure that I am not a hairy-arsed axe murderer.
Last, but not least, Nancy K. wrote this, which for some reason Blogger would not allow her to post in the comments:
"R" rated Grandma...
My oldest daughter is the mother of my three Grandsons. Pam and I are very close. When we go someplace together, Pam always drives ~ which gives me time to KNIT. On one of our many day-trips, I was working on a lace shawl and frequently found my stitch count off. Which (blush) I'm afraid to say would elicit profane language from my normally pristine mouth. After the third or fourth outcry on my part, Pam reminded me that knitting is supposed to be the way I relax. I explained that it is, indeed, but when I make a mistake I do tend to "vocalize" my frustration. (Remember ~ I live alone and such language is ignored by my dogs and cats) My darling daughter is a very loving and non-judgmental person and had nothing more to say about myfrequent occasional outbursts, simply smiling each time I spewed profanity over my uncooperative needles and string. However, the next time that my Grandsons came to spend a day at Grandma's they advised me that "Mom said: when Grandma gets her knitting out, we're supposed to go play in another room"!
I'm glad I decided on a random drawing - it would have been very hard to choose between these great stories! I loved them all...
As it was, the Teenaged Thug drew Carol's number from the bowl. I don't know that my poor yarn can compete with the grandeur of the Pimple Sweater, Carol, but I'll do the best I can!

One Last Chance At Swag!!
I forgot to put out a warning on Tuesday, so I'm giving a 24-hour warning: I will be doing the drawing for the grand prize of Knot All That Yarn (& Stuff) at midnight tonight - well, that would be 11:59 pm, I guess, the very end of the 24th. If you haven't put a little story in the comments section, now is the time to scoot in under the wire!!
You can find the rules (such as they are) and the comments section here. Go for it!!

CONTEST!!!
FANFARE OF TRUMPETS AND FELINE CHORUS
Okay, peoples, it's time for you to pull a little weight around here.
But I'll totally bribe you, so what the heck, right?
In honor of my upcoming birthday - the last of my 40's - and in celebration of the recently passed milestone of gaining the 500th reader of Knot All That, I am holding a contest.
You tell me the funniest/most touching story you have connected with the Fiber Arts. That means knitting, spinning, sewing, quilting, felting, designing, or (for those of you who aren't experienced crafters) clothes you - or someone you know directly - wore or tried to wear. You can post the story in the comments section if it's not too long, or email the story to me at eileen at knotallthat dot com (adjust address as appropriate, I just didn't want to post an easy link for the spammers).
I will do a random drawing on my birthday (Sept. 24), and send to the winner a valuable** skein of Knot All That handspun yarn - or if you are a spinner, a Knot All That Batt/Roving or two - and a few other minor goodies on the side. If you happen to be a non-fiber freak, a reasonable substitute for the yarn will be made. I will collect the winner's pertinent information (address, favorite colors, whether you have a cat, how you stand on the Squirrel Issue, etc.) at the time of the drawing, privately.
But hey, it's not all about the wool and the randomosity. If your story makes me laugh hard enough to upset my precarious bladder control, or makes me cry tears of joy/empathy, I will post it on this blog along with a link to your blogsite. Because I'm all about public announcements re leakage of bodily fluids.
So. Let the story telling and partying begin!!
**Value is, of course, relative. The value to you depends on market value, emotional value, whether you are a Yarn Pig, and whether I raise the value by conveniently dieing of something particularly romantic or vulgar while you are still in possession of said item. The value to me is in my perhaps delusional hope that you will share your delight with your new acquisition (with photos!) in your blog, and link back to me as a sort of Birthday Present. A girl can hope, right?
